What people don't seem to realize about the lawsuit battles between artists and AI is that in 30 years, no one will care.
We are the only generation of artists who entered the art industry before AI became good, then witnessed the tech becoming good enough to disrupt that industry.
In the pre-AI world, one might've seen or heard a piece of art or music, then thought, "I want to dedicate my life to learning how to make something that good". This thought was not predicated on the knowledge that in 30 years a technology would be able to make something approximately or almost that good in 30 seconds rather than 5 months. And we are the last people on Earth to experience that rug pull, because our children and grand-children will NOT have that issue because generative AI will have always existed to them. Going forward, anyone going into the arts already knows what they're getting into, are happy to create it in spite of the technology existing (or uses it to create what they want), and hence will not be motivated to legislate against it.
It feels like the notion that today’s artists are, somehow uniquely pressured by AI is worth talking about, even if it sounds a bit overstated at first. The whole thing is that technology is moving through creative work at this weirdly fast pace, and everyone notices it. Sure, AI can help speed up certain tasks , but then again it brings up very honest worries about originality and whether human creativity actually gets credited. So there’s this tricky question of where to land, in other words how to keep innovation going without flattening the artistic value. ReplyDeleteI was reading we are only generation of artists to be and it really made me think about how creativity grows when people keep learning and sharing ideas. Student life also needs that same balance because assignments and deadlines can sometimes reduce the time available for creative thinking.
